HYPERTAC
interconnect
DIN 41612
HDB-HDC-HDD-HDS-HDT SERIES
All of the connectors that we manufacture have machine turned round pins in the male half and the unique
Hypertac® socket in the female half. The socket has a number of spring wires, the position of which is
defined by a wire carrier which is itself fitted into an outer sleeve or shank that carries the termination of the
socket.
The spring wires within the socket are set at a small angle to the centre line and are deflected when the pin
enters. Each spring wire is deflected within its elastic limit and makes a line contact with the pin.
There is a very smooth wiping action and little wear of the plated surfaces of the pin and the socket wires.
This construction allows very tight control of the spring forces and hence of the insertion and withdrawal
forces.
The smallest practical pin diameter is 0.5mm but there is effectively no upper limit.
Performance features of this combination of round pin in a
Hypertac® socket are:
wLow insertion and separation forces
wMultiple contact areas
wLong life and low rate of wear
wLow electrical resistance
wHigh reliability
wUniform electrical and mechanical characteristics over a high
number of operations
wShock and vibration proof
wHigh current and voltage ratings

HYPERTAC LIMITED reserve the right to modify specifications, materials, processes, etc;
used in the design and manufacture of their products.
ENDURANCE
The Hypertac® contact is capable of significantly enhanced performance, above and beyond the
requirements of BS and MIL approval. Tests have been successfully concluded as follows:
w500 Insertion and withdrawals followed by 1000 hours at 125°C, multiple exposure to salt mist, or 21
days exposure to sulphur dioxide.
w
20,000 full insertion and withdrawal cycles in a benign environment.
wOver 10 million fretting cycles of approximately 1 mm movement.
wThe Hypertac® contact has been monitored for circuit interrupt of greater than 2 Nano-seconds and
has sucessfully passed all tests.
TEMPERATURE
The very low contact resistance of the Hypertac® socket ensures the minimum temperature rise at high
currents.
Peak temperature of insulator material is the primary limiting factor. Materials used in Hypertac®
connectors are chosen to:
w
Provide Widest Ambient Temperature range
w
Withstand Temperature Peaks during assembly, even those generated during Vapour Phase soldering.
VOLTAGE RATING
The exposed airgap and surface path length determine the breakdown voltage. The voltage rating can be
improved by the use of additional dielectric material such as:
w
Fluorosilicone interfacial seals.
w
Potting or conformal coating.
CURRENT RATINGRATING
The Hypertac® contact design and manufacturing tolerances endows the product with the following
attributes:
Double the current rating of other contact designs of a similar size.
Current surges considerably in excess of d.c. rating e.g. 0.6mm dia 4 Amp rated contact will withstand
50 Amp, 5 second pulse, at 25°C
Low contact resistance in high current application minimises temperature rise thereby enabling higher
density interconnects.
We will be pleased to advise on your application and installation requirements. Hypertac® contacts can
provide the solution to your interconnection needs.
FRONT RELEASE/REAR REMOVABLE CONTACTS
CONTACT INSERTION
1 Assembly Tool Tweezer - Non Ferrous.
2 Pick up contact with tweezer, align flats on contact with
flats in insulator.
3 Insert contact into insulator insuring flats are correctly
aligned.
4
Push contact fully into insulator and insure that contact
shoulder is 0.15mm minimum below insulator face.
This will insure the contact retention clips ears spring
out and engage behind the shoulder inside the contact
cavity. A gentle pull - not exceeding 18N (4.0lb) will
check for correct installation.
CONTACT REMOVAL
1 Extraction Tool HPD-286 0.6mm male and female
contacts and 1mm male contact.
HD240 1 mm female contact.
2 Holding main
body of extraction tool, align
contact cavity on mating face of insulator.
above
3
Insert tubular tip fully, insuring that tool remains in line
with the contact cavity. To avoid damage, do not rotate
or exert sideways movement. This will retract contact
retention clip ears from engagement with the shoulder
in the contact cavity.
4 With the tool held fully inserted, depress handle. This
will eject the contact out of the rear of the insulator.
SPECIFICATION
All values at s.t.p. unless otherwise stated. The majority of values given are BS Specification or similar, but in all respects
the performance is superior.
