Both product lines have been designed specifically for the telecommunications market. A very unique and demanding market with its own special performance requirements and product features. The U.L. listed or recognized products of most fuse manufacturers lack a DC rating. Reasons for this vary but would typically include: The following information is presented with the intent of further educating the potential users of our Telpower products on the features, benefits and other nuances of their use. Telpower Disconnect Switches * The biggest market is for AC rated fuses. * DC rated fuses are more difficult to design because of the difficulties in overcurrent interruption. Bussmann Telpower Fuses have no recognized AC performance capabilities. In keeping with the Bussmann Strategy, they are for use in DC applications. The switches presented in the front pages of this brochure exist as a result of intense and determined exposure to the requirements of the telecommunications market over the past several years. The features they embody reflect the industry's requirements which generally include: * Recognition, listing or approval by a national test laboratory. * Installation advantages including multipole modules and the reduction of time to install and wire. * Local and remote alarms with the local blown-fuse indication normally in the form of an LED. Figure 1. * Many other requirements stemming from industry practices adapted over the years as well as Bellcore research results as related to reliability. Bussmann(R) is committed to this market and as such will entertain any special requirements users have for fused disconnect switches. Figure 2. Telpower Fuses At the outset of our quest to provide the telecommunications market with the reliable, high performance, overcurrent protection required, Bussmann realized fuse designs would need to be tailored for the market. A strategy was adopted to ensure all new Telpower Fuses were designed for the rigors of use in direct current circuits (this receives more clarification below). Beyond this, the following items generally characterize Telpower Fuses: * All enjoy U.L. component recognition status. Although not listed for branch circuit protection, each Telpower fuse has satisfactorily passed U.L. requirements for this fuse category. * All are of the current-limiting type offering ease of selective coordination with other overcurrent protection devices in the system. There is a distinct difference between AC and DC overload and short circuit parameters. Figure 1 shows a typical AC short circuit current wave form. With an overload the current passes through zero and this helps the fuse to clear this condition. In a DC circuit the current increases as shown in Figure 2. The rise of current is exponential and the shape of the wave form is determined by the product of the resistance and capacitance (CxR) for a capacitive circuit and the ratio of inductance to resistance (L/R) for an inductive circuit. The most common method of defining this wave form is by determining the time required for the current to reach 63.2% of its final steady state condition. This is called the time constant of the circuit (). * The DC voltage and fault current interrupting ratings are very generous when compared to the typical requirements of 24, 48 or 60 Vdc and 5 or 10 kA. Telpower Fuses easily meet Bellcore's maximum requirements. * A distinctive blue label surrounds the body denoting its Telpower Fuse/DC rated status. The information presented in Figure 3 simulates oscillographic results of short-circuit tests conducted on various 30A overcurrent protection devices being used in the Telecommunications industry. Each device was subjected to 5000A, 60 Vdc and it is easy to see the superior performance of the Telpower fuse in clearing the fault and limiting the current. Proper selection of the circuit protective device will avert the mechanical and thermal damage associated with large fault currents. Some of these countries conduct their own testing, such as VDE, the German testing agency. However, most accept the testing of Svenska Elektriska Material Kontrollanstalten or Semko, the Swedish testing agency. Those products tested by Semko that pass the IEC requirements are marked with S. The testing by European agencies revolves around voltage drop, time-current characteristics, breaking capacity and endurance tests. However, the biggest differences between North American and European standards are the time-current characteristics. As shown below, fuses built to North American Standards are not compatible with IEC 127. Listing Agencies and Standards - U.L. In the United States, Underwriters Laboratories has generated standards specifying fuse performance. They test and list fuses to these standards. Fuses that cannot realize the aegis of these standards are treated differently by Underwriters Laboratories. They can be recognized under their Component Recognition Program. International Electrotechnical Commission - IEC 127 The Standards set forth by the IEC are very much different from those of Underwriters Laboratories. Because the electrical characteristics are so different, U.L. and IEC rated fuses are not interchangeable. When designing products to go overseas, it is important to consider that world standards may require a fuse different than those being used in North America. Notice that at 135% of its rated current a North American fuse must open within one hour while an IEC fuse must be able to carry 150% of its rated current for at least one hour. The IEC uses symbols to denote fuse time/current characteristics, and breaking capacity. However, at 250 volts, these fuses, as shown below, may have lower interrupting ratings. Both North American and IEC fuses' interrupting/breaking capacity are tested using AC. Their DC ratings could be different because of circuit time constant considerations. It is generally easier for a fuse to operate under AC than DC. Other IEC Standards - IEC 269 The IEC Standard, IEC 127, consists of 6 parts which all address miniature and subminiature fuses and associated fuseholders. The range of fuses covered by this Standard is somewhat limited. Physically larger fuses with higher voltage and current ratings as well as greater interrupting capacity are covered by another IEC Standard, IEC 269. 36 Bussmann(R) The main body of IEC 269 is entitled "Low-Voltage Fuses". It consists of 4 parts plus amendments and supplements addressing general and supplementary requirements for industrial and domestic applications. Those parts which "best apply" to Bussmann(R) Telpower Fuses are: IEC 269-1 IEC 269-2 Low-Voltage Fuses Part 1: General Requirements Low-Voltage Fuses Part 2: Supplementary Requirements For Fuses IEC 269-2-1 For Use By Authorized Persons (Fuses Mainly For Industrial Application) The phrase "best apply" does not mean that Telpower Fuses meet the requirements of the above Standards. Actually, since these fuses were designed using Underwriters Laboratories (U.L.) rating requirements, their characteristics are quite a bit different. Further to this, since Telpower Fuses are not specifically covered by any existing U.L. Standard, they have been tested by U.L. under their Component Recognition Program. To receive Component Recognition, the following list is typical of the tests that need to be successfully passed and witnessed by U.L.: * Carry I n or 1.1 I n, depending on fuse type, until fuse body temperature stabilization. (I n = marked current rating of the fuse.) * For I n 60 amps, the fuse must open within 1 hour at 1.35 I n. For I n > 60, the time is 2 hours at 1.35 I n. * 2 I n low voltage timing tests Rated Current I n (Amps) 30 60 100 200 400 < < < < < Max. Opening Time (Minutes) I n 30 I n 60 I n 100 I n 200 I n 400 I n 600 2 4 6 8 10 12 * Open at 2 I n at full voltage with no signs of undue stress on the fuse casing. * Maximum energy test at full voltage. * Open at the interrupting rating at full voltage without rupture of the casing. * Some Telpower Fuses were required to interrupt intermediate levels of fault current at full voltage. To maintain our Component Recognition mark, U.L. requires periodic follow-up tests as above. Telpower (R) Technology (T 2) Bussmann(R) U.L. listed fuses are normally subjected to a somewhat more extensive test program as outlined in the applicable U.L. Standard which would include the above tests as well as: * Specific dimensional requirements. * Additional intermediate levels of fault current. * Tests at the fuse interrupting rating during which I p and I 2t letthrough values are compared to maximum limits set forth in the Standards. The IEC 269-1 and 269-2-1 Standards generally cover the same types of tests but at different multiples of I n. For example, depending on the fuse type, a 15 amp U.L. rated fuse must be able to carry either 15 or 16.5 amps continuously and open within 1 hour at 20.25 amps (1.35 I n). However, a 15 amp IEC rated fuse must carry 22.5 amps (1.5 I n) for 1 hour and open within 1 hour at 28.5 amps (1.9 I n). Other major U.L. and IEC differences are as follows: * IEC Standards generally specify the complete time-current curve range as in Figure 4 which gives the minimum and maximum limits for a 6 amp "g G" fuse (full range, general purpose fuse as are Telpower(R) Fuses). Other than at up to 2 I n (sometimes 5 I n) U.L. does not specify the time-current curve. * IEC Standards contain a cyclic loading test to verify the fuse current rating. U.L. uses a carry/temperature test. * IEC Standards specify both the minimum values for melting I 2t and maximum operating I 2t values for use in determining "discrimination ratios" which they specify as 1:1.6 for I n 16 amps. U.L. leaves discrimination (selective coordination) ratios to the fuse manufacturer. * Breaking capacity tests for IEC are undertaken at 110% of the marked voltage rating. U.L. tests are done at 100% to 105%. * Where DC tests are required, IEC Standards specify a time constant of 15 to 20 ms. For recognized components U.L. allows the manufacturer to specify the time constant. Telecommunications applications for Telpower Fuses require tests only at very low time constants. * IEC Standards include recommended DC voltage ratings, the lowest of which is 110 Vdc increasing from there to 125 then 220 and up. These are much higher than needed for most Telecommunications applications which are typically 24 or 48 Vdc. U.L. allows the manufacturer to fix the voltage level under their Component Recognition Program. Figure 4. With all this said, one can easily see why a U.L. rated and IEC rated fuse of the same marked ampere rating are not nearly the same. A graphical depiction of this is given in Figure 4 which, as noted above, defines the time-current curve for "g G" 6 amp fuses to IEC 269-2-1. Also shown is the actual curve of our Telpower Fuse TPA-10 which could make a very suitable substitute as relates to current carrying capability and minimum levels of current required to open the fuse. Based on this, and the following Table, potential users of fuses with IEC characteristics might consider using U.L. rated fuses of a higher current rating. Although Telpower Fuses are not available in all the ratings shown in the Table, they could be produced rather quickly as the need arises. IEC/U.L. Ambient Temperature Effect Because of the manner in which a fuse is designed to operate, its ability to carry current decreases as the temperature of the air surrounding it increases. This effect is shown in Figure 5. As presented in the graph, the maximum permissible continuous load current, Ib, assumes no cooling air flow over the fuse as well as the use of a suitably sized conductor and proper mounting. Shown on the graph is a 15 amp Bussmann(R) Telpower(R) Fuse (U.L.) and another curve of a higher U.L. ampere rating which would approximate an IEC 15 amp fuse. Both fuses derate with temperature but because the IEC type of fuse is required to carry more current, as noted in the above discussion, at any given ambient, its Ib will be greater than the U.L. type - so much so that it will still be able to carry the 15 amps even in a 75C ambient. 38 Bussmann(R) Notes Bussmann(R) 39 Notes 40 Bussmann(R) Bussmann(R) Index by Part Number Catalog Symbol 15087 15100 15200 15800 11 Type 1608FF 24 Type 3216CP 3216FF 3216LV 6125TD 630 7 Type 70 Series 74 Type Page 17 6 7 4 32 18 32 23 19 20 21 15 32 17 33 Catalog Symbol 75 Type 76 Type 80 Type 81 Type ABC AGC C515 C518 C519 C520 ETF FP FT-2 GBB GDA Headquarters Cooper Bussmann P.O.
