LM140L/LM340L Series 3-Terminal Positive Regulators
Check for Samples: LM140L,LM340L
1FEATURES The LM140LA/LM340LA are available in the low
2 Line Regulation of 0.04%/V profile metal three lead TO (NDT) and the LM340LA
Load Regulation of 0.01%/mA are also available in the plastic TO-92 (LP). With
Output Voltage Tolerances of adequate heat sinking the regulator can deliver 100
mA output current. Current limiting is included to limit
±2% at Tj= 25°C and ±4% Over the the peak output current to a safe value. Safe area
Temperature Range (LM140LA) protection for the output transistor is provided to limit
±3% Over the Temperature Range internal power dissipation. If internal power
(LM340LA) dissipation becomes too high for the heat sinking
Output Current of 100 mA provided, the thermal shut-down circuit takes over,
preventing the IC from overheating.

DESCRIPTION
The LM140L series of three terminal positive Connection Diagrams
regulators is available with several fixed output
voltages making them useful in a wide range of
applications. The LM140LA is an improved version of
the LM78LXX series with a tighter output voltage
tolerance (specified over the full military temperature
range), higher ripple rejection, better regulation and
lower quiescent current. The LM140LA regulators
have ±2% VOUT specification, 0.04%/V line regulation,
and 0.01%/mA load regulation. When used as a
zener diode/resistor combination replacement, the Figure 1. TO Metal Can Package (NDT)
LM140LA usually results in an effective output (Bottom View)
impedance improvement of two orders of magnitude,
and lower quiescent current. These regulators can
provide local on card regulation, eliminating the
distribution problems associated with single point
regulation. The voltages available allow the LM140LA
to be used in logic systems, instrumentation, Hi-Fi,
and other solid state electronic equipment. Although
designed primarily as fixed voltage regulators, these
devices can be used with external components to Figure 2. TO-92 Plastic Package (LP)
obtain adjustable voltages and currents. (Bottom View)

(1) The marketing status values are defined as follows:
ACTIVE: Product device recommended for new designs.
LIFEBUY: TI has announced that the device will be discontinued, and a lifetime-buy period is in effect.
NRND: Not recommended for new designs. Device is in production to support existing customers, but TI does not recommend using this part in a new design.
PREVIEW: Device has been announced but is not in production. Samples may or may not be available.
OBSOLETE: TI has discontinued the production of the device.
(2) RoHS: TI defines "RoHS" to mean semiconductor products that are compliant with the current EU RoHS requirements for all 10 RoHS substances, including the requirement that RoHS substance
do not exceed 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials. Where designed to be soldered at high temperatures, "RoHS" products are suitable for use in specified lead-free processes. TI may
reference these types of products as "Pb-Free".
RoHS Exempt: TI defines "RoHS Exempt" to mean products that contain lead but are compliant with EU RoHS pursuant to a specific EU RoHS exemption.
Green: TI defines "Green" to mean the content of Chlorine (Cl) and Bromine (Br) based flame retardants meet JS709B low halogen requirements of <=1000ppm threshold. Antimony trioxide based
flame retardants must also meet the <=1000ppm threshold requirement.
(3) MSL, Peak Temp. - The Moisture Sensitivity Level rating according to the JEDEC industry standard classifications, and peak solder temperature.
(4) There may be additional marking, which relates to the logo, the lot trace code information, or the environmental category on the device.

(5) Multiple Device Markings will be inside parentheses. Only one Device Marking contained in parentheses and separated by a "~" will appear on a device. If a line is indented then it is a continuation
of the previous line and the two combined represent the entire Device Marking for that device.
(6) Lead finish/Ball material - Orderable Devices may have multiple material finish options. Finish options are separated by a vertical ruled line. Lead finish/Ball material values may wrap to two
lines if the finish value exceeds the maximum column width.
