optics.Properlightingcanincreaseaccuracy,systemreliabilityandresponsetime.Further-
more,failuretoimplementcorrectobjectilluminationwill,inmostcases,leadtolossoftime
andfinancialresources.
Agoodimageforprocessingpurposesisanimagethathasthegreatesttexturecontrastinthe
areasofinterestagainstthebackground.Tobeabletoreliablyprocesstheimagethesecon-
ditionsmustprevailwithcertainaccuracyovertime.
SpectralRadiance
andColor
Temperature
Thespectralradianceofthelightinguseddependsontheapplication,sincecertainwave-
lengthsoflightmightproduceeitheradditionalorthedesiredinformationintheapplication.
Generallyspeakingthespectraldistributionofthelightsourcesshouldbeasevenaspossible
inthevisiblelightspectrum(350to700nm),wheretheAKYLAcamerasareintendedtobe
operated.DuetothetechnologyusedinthecameraandtheCCDsinherentincreasedsensi-
tivitytotheredendofthespectrum,thelightingshouldcontaininitaconsiderableblue
content.
Thecolortemperatureofalightsourceisaprettyaccuratemeasureofthebalanceofspectral
radiance.Reasonableresultscanbeobtainedwhenlightingcolortemperatureisclosetoor
over4000k.Highqualitycolorimagesrequireacolortemperatureofaround6500kormore.
LightingthatgeneratesalotofIRorUVmightaffecttheworkingoftheCCDsensorsand
shouldbefilteredoutorthesourceoflightingmustbechosensothatthecontentofundesired
wavelengthsisminimized.
Uniformityof
Lighting Uniformityoflightingmeansthattherearenegligiblevariationsinlightintensityovertheused
spectrum.Also,changesinambientlightingshouldnotaffecttheimagingsituation.Sucha
lightsourceiscalledalambertiansourceoruniformdiffusedlight.Thislightcanbecollimated
tofurtherimprovestabilityandintensity.
Alambertiansourcewilldoforanimagingsituationwhereshadowsandreflectionsshouldbe
minimized.Therearemanyotherschemesoflightingwhich,ofcourse,dependontheapplica-
tion.Soitisuptotheusertoexperimentwithdifferentlightingschemestofindwhichscheme
bestcontraststhedesiredimagefeature.
Thewaythelightisdrivenalsohasamajorimpactontheevennessoflighting.Normallyeither
highfrequencyballasts(orderoftensofkHz)areusedtodrivecertaintypesoflightingorDC
lightingisused.Somesystemsalsousethreedifferentlampseachdriveninadifferentphase
withasquarewaveinsteadofasinusoidalone.Inanycase,ifDClightingisnotused,thefre-
quencydrivingthelightsshouldbeconsiderablyhigherthanthelinefrequencyusedforthe
application.
Agingofthelightsourceshouldalwaysbeconsidered,sincetheremightbechangesininten-
sityandcolortemperature.Ifthereisfinecolorbasedqualificationtobeperformed,thisaspect
shouldbecarefullyconsidered.
Thetemperaturedependencyofthechosenlightsourceshouldbeverified.Forexample,fluo-
rescenttubeshavearelativelyhighrelationbetweentheoperatingtemperatureandboththe
intensityandtheproportionofcoloroutput,whileallAKYLAcamerashavealmostnochanges
intheirperformance.
