APE Extended Frequency
Response Analog Modulator
Product Bulletin
This high performance analog modulator is
designed for use in microwave fiberoptic links
operating at frequencies to 20 GHz and beyond.
APE optical waveguides and velocity matched
transmission line technology are combined in a
modulator offering high power, low loss optic al
characteristics and high modulation efficiency. A
fiberoptic link using an AM modulator exhibits
greater than a 6 dB reduction in noise figure when
compared to a link using earlier modulator
technology , a t comparable cost. The gain and
output power requirements of associated input
preamplifiers are reduced by a factor of four ,
minimizing overall system power dissipation, size
and cost. F urther , the modulator can be driven
over full extinction at frequencies to 20 GHz and
beyond. The excellent impedance characteristic
eliminates ripples and dropouts from the fre-
quency response . The frequency response shown is
the measured electrical output power from an
ideal photodiode, referenced to the RF power
applied to the modulator (E/E). Modulators are
available for operation at both 1300 and 1550 nm
wavelengths.

Notes:
1. All measurements made at 23°C unless otherwise noted.
2. VX is specified at the modulator. PX is the power required to generate VX /2 at the connector.
3. Optical loss is measured at the maximum of the modulators transfer function and does not include the 3 dB loss incurred when operated at quadrature.
4. Optimum distortion performance may require bias control.
